About Durga
Durga works around social taboos, conservatism, inequalities and border topics, focuses on bringing stories from communities, personal memories, and powerless feelings, especially marginalized communities, Dalit and women’s stories.
Durga herself comes from the so called Dalit community in Nepal (particularly in Hinduism there is a caste hierarchy system where more than 300 million people, from certain communities are labelled as lower, untouchable, dirty and impure.); this biggest social prejudice is still practiced in many South Asian countries and for Durga to represent as Dalit identity and be a liberal artist is dense. But the other hand she notices that in performing art there is a less space for Dalits’ stories, and unconsidireted to find their artistic histories. Hence she is rather motivated to connect her artistic focus to understand how to bring oppressed stories and search for their aesthetic values than disregard topic.
She expresses participatory art, dark humour, ironic and playfulness practices as fundamental performance tools. She sees herself more as a collaborative performer who wants to engage with distinct groups and directors than a soloist but at the same time she is a rooted trained independent actress, performer and theatre mentor too.
For her to create artwork is to constantly search for personal yet universal liberty.
Durga has worked with renowned artists from all around the world, such as Andrey Bartenev, Robert M. Johanson, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, Tony Hall, Kasper Ravnhøj, Laurent Chetouane, Phillip Zarrilli, Bianca Casady, Øystein Elle, Anders Paulin, Sudesh Adhana, Ram Krishna Ranjan and many more… She completed her MFA education under the supervision of Camilla Eeg-Tverbakk, Claire Hind, Eleonora Fabiao and Joshua Sofaer.
She is the first Master’s graduate artist in theatre education in Nepal and has been touring with the various performances all around Nepal in rural areas. As well as performed in India, Denmark, Norway, Spain and in the USA.
She has worked for half a year in Østfold International Theatre Company Fredrikstad, as a 80% Artist research internship 2022 (funded by Vikenfylkeskommune Norway).
